Gandhi once said: ‘Those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is.”
William Wilberforce was a relentless man of faith whose religious convictions compelled his sustained campaign against slavery. The idea that his religion should have no space in the civic sphere would never have occurred to him – as it was his faith that compelled him into politics.
The same can be said for many others, from Josephine Butler to Martin Luther King II to Janani Luwum.
Over time this website will bring you more of the stories of these forgotten heroes whose political activism was grounded in their faith.
